On July 15, at about 11:50 am, a suspect, later identified as Rodney Lewis B/m/10-23-85, entered the Jack in the Box at 100 E. Camp Wisdom Road and placed a food order. While the cashier had the cash drawer open to make change, Lewis pulled out a gun and jumped over the counter. Lewis grabbed money from that register and attempted to get more money from the drive thru register. The cashier at the drive thru was unable to open the register and Lewis struck the cashier with the gun. Lewis then fled the location on foot.
Officer Whitmire, #9439, was driving past this Jack in the Box enroute to another call location when a witness ran out of the business and flagged him down. The witness pointed out Lewis who was running away and told Officer Whitmire that Lewis had just robbed the business.
Officer Whitmire observed Lewis throw down a black gun as he ran and broadcast the direction of travel over the police radio.
Lewis ran around a hotel and jumped a fence. Officer Otto, #8894, was nearby and heard the description of the suspect broadcast over the police radio. Officer Otto found and detained Lewis at 100 Redwing until Officer Whitmire could get there and safely place him under arrest. Officer Whitmire retrieved the gun Lewis had thrown down while fleeing the restaurant. Lewis was transported to county jail and has been charged with Aggravated Robbery, Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon and Evading Arrest.
