On September 14, 2014 at about 6:04 p.m., the suspect in this officer-involved shooting, Joel Allen W/M 10/1/1979, died. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
Update on the Officer Involved Shooting on Prudential:
On September 7, 2014, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Dallas Police Officer Michael DeWilde #9524, was assisting a Federal Agent of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in locating a fugitive. During surveillance at 1550 Empire Central, the Knights Inn Hotel, Officer DeWilde and the Federal Agent observed suspicious activity in the southeast corner of the parking lot. Officers observed Suspect Joel Allen W/M 10/1/1979 drive into the parking lot in a red 2013 Chevrolet. Suspect Allen exited his vehicle and made contact with an individual in the southeast corner of the parking lot and engaged in suspicious activity.
As Suspect Allen returned to his vehicle, Officer DeWilde and the Federal Agent exited their vehicle and approached Suspect Allen. Officer DeWilde was attempting to speak with the suspect who had entered his vehicle, when Suspect Allen drove his vehicle at Officer DeWilde and struck him. Officer DeWilde landed on the hood of the suspect vehicle and was carried on the hood for a distance. While Officer DeWilde was on the hood of the suspect vehicle, he was able to access his weapon and fire at the suspect multiple times. Officer DeWilde was thrown from the hood as Suspect Allen fled the location. Suspect Allen fled southbound on I35E and took the Inwood Road exit where he became involved in a one vehicle accident on the service road.
Officer DeWilde received multiple injuries during this incident and was transported to Parkland Hospital where he was treated and released. Suspect Allen had a gunshot wound to his chest and is in critical condition at Parkland Hospital. An accident investigation report was documented on case #216138-2014. An Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant offense will be documented on case #216145-2014.
On September 7, at approximately 10:46pm a Dallas Police officer was assisting a federal agency in their search for a fugitive. They were at the “Knights Inn”, a hotel at 1200 Prudential Blvd. During the course of their investigation, the Dallas police officer observed suspicious activity believed to involve narcotics.
The officer began to approach the suspect who had entered the suspect vehicle. The suspect drove his vehicle at the officer and struck him. The officer landed on the hood. The Officer was able to access his weapon and fire at the suspect while he was on the hood. The officer was thrown off the hood of the suspect vehicle and the suspect fled the location. This all occurred in the parking lot of this location.
Officers found the suspect in the suspect vehicle at the intersection of I-35 and Inwood Rd after it appeared to have been involved in a single vehicle collision. The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is currently in critical condition. We have collected video that we believed captured the incident and are reviewing as part of this investigation
