In the Public Safety meeting today, Chief David O. Brown will announce that overall crime is down by 2.15% in the City of Dallas. This reduction is driven by the decrease in property crime, which is down by 4.37%. Overall crime is down for the 6th consecutive month and the 11th consecutive year.
The biggest challenge that the Department faces is violent crime, which is up by 10.79%. Violent crime is the most significant crime challenge that the Department will face in over 14 years. Although we have cut violent crime in half over the past 14 years, we will continue to be more aggressive in attacking this challenge while respecting the civil rights of our citizens. The department will utilize specialized units to address violent crime.
