According to witnesses on October 30, 2015 just before noon, a subject inside the Veterans Affairs clinic at 4243 S. Polk St. began causing a disturbance and threatened an employee of the VA.  A uniformed Veterans Affairs police officer working inside the location intervened and began to issue the subject a citation related to the disturbance and threat.

Witnesses said that the subject walked outside to the parking lot and the uniformed officer followed him.  The subject retrieved a handgun from a vehicle in the parking lot and pointed the gun at the officer.  The officer fired striking the subject.  That subject was taken to Methodist Central hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.  The officer was not injured.

The Veterans Administration police requested that we conduct the investigation and we are obliging.  Any questions regarding the Veterans Administration or its police officer should be directed to Ms. Penny Kirby, Public Affairs Specialist at 214.857.1158.

The subject will be charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant and we will release his name once he is formally charged.  We will provide additional details as they become available and appropriate for release.
