Press Conference regarding Weekend Homicides

Homicide at 500 Sunset Avenue

On January 23, 2016, at approximately 2: 30 a.m., officers responded to shooting call at 534 Sunset Ave at the La Costena Bar also known as the Patio Bar. The suspect, a L/M 25-30 5’ 8” 150 lbs with a shaved head or very close cropped hair, was involved in an altercation inside of the bar.  He was escorted out of the bar to the parking lot. The suspect was involved in a second incident in the parking lot.  The suspect then got into his vehicle, a green four-door sedan and began shooting as he drove out of the parking lot. The victim, Ashley Wilson B/F 29, who was not involved in either altercation, was standing outside of the bar entrance with several individuals when she was shot. When officers arrived, they found Ms. Wilson deceased from a single gunshot wound to her upper body. This investigation is on-going and detectives are currently following up on leads; however, we are asking that anyone who was in the bar and witnessed the altercation to come forward. Updated January 28, 2016 at 8:30 a.m.:

On January 24, 2016, at approximately 11:17 p.m., the victim, Steven Hernandez, was shot and killed in the 4500 block of Maple Avenue by an unknown Latin male. The victim was with his girlfriend who was also shot and suffered minor injuries. Detectives were able to retrieve video from the convenience store that led to development of the identity of several suspects. On January, 25, 2016, detectives were able to identify and arrest one suspect (Ponce) involved in the shooting. On, January 27, 2016, the Dallas Police Gang Unit was able to locate another suspect involved in the shooting. Suspect Sanches was picked out of a Photo lineup and identified as the individual who provided Suspect Ponce with the gun that killed Steven Hernandez. The suspect is in custody and bond is set at $100,000.00.

Homicide at 4500 Maple Avenue

On January 23, 2016, at approximately 11: 17 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call at 4500 Maple Avenue. The victims, Alana Jim a L/F 24 and Steve Hernandez a L/M 30, started an argument with several individuals in the 4500 block of Maple Avenue. One of the individuals opened fire on the victims. Ms. Jim was shot once and sustained a non-life threatening injury, and Mr. Hernandez was shot several times. Mr. Hernandez ran down the street to 4443 Maple Avenue, where he collapsed. Dallas Fire Rescue responded and transported both victims to the hospital where Ms. Jim was later released and Mr. Hernandez was pronounced deceased. 

During the murder investigation of Mr. Hernandez, it was discovered that Henry Ponce L/M 19 was the suspect.  A warrant was issued for his arrest and a search warrant for his residence in Irving, Texas. Both warrants were executed in Irving, Texas, with the assistance of the Irving Police Department. Suspect Ponce was arrested and transported to the Dallas Police Department Headquarters. He was then transported to Lew Sterrett jail where he is being held on a $150, 000 bond.
