Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that Cesar Alejandro Mejia, a Latin male, 17-years-old, was responsible for the death of victim Jose Cruz on December 25, 2016. With the assistance of the public and the Dallas Police Metro Unit, Mejia was taken into custody. He was transported to the Dallas Police Homicide Unit and read his Miranda warning before being interviewed. He spoke with detectives briefly before being booked into the Dallas County jail for murder with a $500,000.00 bond.

On December 25, 2016, at approximately 10:32 p.m., the victim, Jose Cruz, a Latin male 19-years-old, was involved in a crash at the 2100 block of West Amherst Avenue. As a result of the initial crash investigation, it was determined the victim had been shot. He was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.
