During the afternoon of Monday, March 20, 2017, detectives received a call from the Freestone County Sheriff’s office with possible information regarding the Hit and Run accident that caused the death of Rachel Spelman.
Detectives traveled to Corsicana, Texas and interviewed individuals with knowledge that led detectives to believe John Adrian Esparza, L/M/38 was involved in this collision.
Detectives, using law enforcement data bases, were able to locate an address for the Esparza in Madill, Oklahoma.
A request for assistance from the Marshal County Sheriff’s Office in Madill, Oklahoma was then made. Marshal County Deputies were able to locate the vehicle at the address that Dallas Police Vehicle Crimes Unit detectives provided. Deputies advised our detectives that the vehicle had obvious damage consistent with striking a pedestrian.
Dallas Police detectives traveled overnight to Madill, Oklahoma and met with Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputies who assisted detectives with taking John Adrian Esparza into custody. Esparza was then transported to the Marshall County Jail where he was interviewed by Dallas Police Vehicle Crimes Detectives. Esparza gave a full confession to detectives regarding his role in this offense.
John Adrian Esparza is charged with Accident Involving Death, a second degree felony. He is currently being held in the Marshall County Jail in Madill, Oklahoma. He will be extradited back to Dallas County by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office at a later date.

The Dallas Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance regarding the following incident:
On March 18, 2017, at about 2:10 a.m., a dark colored sedan, unknown make and model, struck a female pedestrian in the 2200 block of Cedar Springs Road. After the vehicle struck the female pedestrian, the unknown driver stopped and exited the vehicle. The driver walked back, looked at the pedestrian on the ground, and fled the location in an unknown direction. The driver is described as a Black male with short curly hair, approximately 5’10” to 6’2” in height, and was last seen wearing a gray shirt and black pants. The suspect vehicle has front-end damage to the front windshield and possibly the back window. The victim is 23-year-old Rachel Spelman.
