Since 2003, the Star of Texas Award has recognized the brave men and women who gave their lives or sustained serious injuries in the line of duty. On September 11, 2018, Officer Rogelio Santander Jr., Officer Crystal Almeida, Officer Juan Hernandez Jr., and Senior Corporal Robert McMillian Jr., were acknowledged for their line of duty service by Governor Greg Abbott and were honored with the Star of Texas Award.
Officer Crystal Almeida was seriously injured in the line of duty on April 24, 2018 while attempting to arrest a suspect. Officer Almeida has protected and served the Dallas community for three years.
Officer Juan Hernandez Jr. was seriously injured in the line of duty on January 4, 2016 while searching the vehicle of a suspect. Officer Hernandez has protected and served the Dallas community for fourteen years.
Senior Corporal Robert McMillan Jr. was seriously injured in the line of duty on October 14, 2016 while apprehending an active shooter. Senior Corporal McMillan has protected and served the Dallas community for twenty-two years
Officer Rogelio Santander Jr. gave his life in the line of duty on April 24, 2018 while attempting to arrest a suspect. Officer Santander protected and served his community for three years. He was 26-years-old.
During the ceremony yesterday, Governor Greg Abbott stated, “Today, Texas honors the extraordinary few, those who have demonstrated the character and the courage to repeatedly put their lives on the line.” The Dallas Police Department stands with Governor Abbott in honoring our heroes for their service and sacrifice.
