On December 3, 2019, the US Marshall’s North Texas Fugitive Task Force arrested Melvin Crowder, a 25-year-old black male, for the murder of James Burks on November 20, 2019. Crowder was taken to Dallas Police Headquarters and interviewed by a homicide detective. He was subsequently transported to Lew Sterrett Jail and charged with murder, a first-degree felony. His bond will be set by a Dallas County magistrate.

On November 20, 2019, at around 12:40 p.m., Dallas Police responded to a shooting call at 12100 Abrams Road. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, James Burks, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers were told that a group of males had been arguing in front of the convenience store and the victim, James Burks, a 33-year-old black male, exchanged gunfire with the suspect. He was described as a black male, approximately 25-years-old, with a short mohawk-style haircut, last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and black track pants. Following the shooting the suspect reportedly entered the passenger side of a silver 4-door sedan that fled the location.
