On January 4, 2020 at approximate 5:18 a.m., Dallas officers responded to a disturbance call in the 9600 block of Dale Glade Drive. The disturbance call was between a female victim being harassed by her ex-boyfriend. While en route, officers obtained information on the ex-boyfriend and subsequently located him sitting inside a vehicle parked in front of the residence.

The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop at which point the ex-boyfriend/suspect sped away. When the suspect refused to stop, the officers discontinued their pursuit. However, the officers were able to locate the suspect on foot in the alley way of the 9700 block of Oak Gate Lane. The officers pursued the suspect on foot and eventually caught up with him between two houses and where they attempted to apprehend him. The suspect refused to be taken into custody and a struggle ensued. During the brief struggle, the officers and the suspect made contact with a parked vehicle at the residence.
Hearing the noise outside, and suspecting that her vehicle was being broken into, the homeowner, an 82-year-old female, came to the front door of her residence and yelled at the people she thought were breaking into her vehicle, telling them to get off her car, unaware that they were officers. The struggle continued between the officers and the suspect and the officers heard a gunshot. They realized that the 82-year-old female home-owner had discharged a weapon. The officers retreated to a position of cover, identified themselves as police officers and instructed the homeowner to drop the weapon. The homeowner complied with the officer’s instructions and advised that she was unaware that they were officers when she fired the shot into the air. There were no injuries as a result of the shooting. The suspect, Homer Shepherd, Black male 49-years-old, was subsequently taken into custody and charged with Parole Violation, Evading Arrest and possession of narcotics.
The homeowner was transported to police headquarters where she was interviewed by detectives. After the interview, the homeowner was released. The shooting incident will be referred to the Dallas County Grand Jury as a Deadly Conduct offense and documented on Case Number 002289-2020. There were no injuries reported during this incident.
