Veteran Affairs Police Officer Involved Shooting

The deceased subject has been identified as Donald Ashcraft, a White male 51-years-old.



On January 8, 2020, at about 10:22 p.m., Dallas police officers were dispatched to a shooting call at Veteran Affairs Hospital located at 4500 S. Lancaster Road.
Upon arrival, DPD officers were advised that VA Hospital Police had encountered an individual who had come to the hospital for psychiatric issues and who was armed with a knife.

According to the VA Hospital Police officers, at some point during their interaction with him, the subject started to walk off and VA Hospital police officers followed and tried to disarm the subject. According to those officers, their attempts were unsuccessful and they discharged their duty weapons striking the subject.

The individual was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. Dallas Police were not involved in the shooting incident however, the investigation of the shooting is being conducted by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and will be documented on case number 005464-2020. The Veteran Affairs Officers were not injured.
