Major Danny Williams Discusses Steve Keith Jarrell Jr’s Death in Custody Case (BWC Video Provided) 

Police were called on December 1, 2020, at 12:33 a.m., to a home in the 2000 block of Prichard Lane. The caller stated that Mr. Steve Keith Jarrell Jr. was schizophrenic and acting confused and needed to be taken to Green Oaks Hospital. Officers met with the caller and evaluated Mr. Jarrell.  He was determined to be in an altered mental state and the decision was made to take him to Green Oaks Hospital. Mr. Jarrell was medically cleared on scene by Dallas Fire Rescue Engine 34. Mr. Jarrell was placed in handcuffs and transported by the Dallas Police Department to Green Oaks Hospital. Upon arrival at Green Oaks, officers observed Mr. Jarrell unconscious in the back seat of the squad car.  Officers requested an ambulance. Medical professionals at Green Oaks assisted with CPR and assisted as DPD transported Mr. Jarrell to Medical City Emergency Room in their squad car. Mr. Jarrell later died at Medical City Hospital.

In compliance with the Dallas Police Department’s new video release policy, we are releasing the video this afternoon. Tonya McClary of the Office of Community Police Oversight (OCPO) has reviewed the BWC video.  The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is conducting a death in custody investigation surrounding this incident, and detectives have met with the family to view the video.
