Officer Involved Shooting on Metropolitan Avenue

Update: 11/2/22 @ 2:12 p.m.

The Dallas Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on October 30, 2022, at 3410 Metropolitan Road. This is the eighth officer-involved shooting involving a Dallas Police officer in 2022. On October 30, 2022, at around 06:10 PM, Dallas police responded to a disturbance, armed encounter call at 3410 Metropolitan Ave, Dallas, Texas. The preliminary investigation determined the 911 caller said a man at the scene had a gun and was pointing it at people.

Officers Zachary Wohlwend and Thomas Hartmann arrived on the scene and located the suspect matching the description given by the 911 caller. A witness came up to officers and told them the suspect, 61-year-old Donathy Doddy, had a gun. Officers then saw the gun in Doddy’s pocket and took cover behind vehicles parked at the scene, drawing their weapons. Officers started giving commands for those standing near Doddy to leave the area and get to safety– and started calling the suspect to get his attention. The suspect then turned towards the officers and placed his hand on his gun. Officers gave the suspect loud verbal commands to get his hand off his gun. Doddy then drew his gun and ran towards the officers, firing his weapon at least once as he ran in the officer’s direction. Officers Wohlwend and Hartmann both fired their weapons at the suspect as he ran toward them. The suspect was hit by the officer’s gunfire and fell to the ground. Officers took the suspect into custody and when the crowd was under control, started CPR. Doddy was taken to a local hospital where he died at 6:31 pm. A second, uninvolved person at the scene was also injured by gunfire, shot in a lower leg, and taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The victim was treated and released. How the victim was injured is part of the ongoing investigation. Several vehicles and a local business near the scene were also hit by the gunfire. The officers involved were not injured. Dallas Police recovered the suspect’s weapon from the scene. The incident investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigation Unit.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office responded and is conducting an independent investigation.

The Office of Community Police Oversight was notified and responded to the scene.

IN AN EFFORT TO BE TRANSPARENT, THE DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS RELEASING THE BODY-WORN CAMERA FOOTAGE OF THE INCIDENT.
