Update: July 28, 2023
The Dallas Police continue to investigate the officer-involved shooting that occurred on July 25, 2023, in the 7200 block of Lemmon Avenue.
This is the fifth officer involved shooting involving a Dallas Police officer in 2023.
On July 25, 2023, at about 11:00AM, Dallas Police Northwest Covert and Crime Response Team officers were doing surveillance on a stolen U- haul truck parked in the 9600 block of El Centro Drive.
The preliminary investigation determined officers saw the suspect, 41-year-old Ryan Taylor, get into the truck and drive away.
Covert officers called in marked patrol officers to conduct a felony stop of the truck.
While stopped at the stop sign at Dunhaven and Lenel Place, Taylor intentionally backed into an occupied covert vehicle, causing the airbags to deploy and pushing the vehicle into a fire hydrant.
Uniform officers attempted to stop Taylor, but he sped away on side streets hitting several vehicles and onto the Dallas North Tollway where he hit more cars.
Taylor exited the Tollway – driving until he reached the 7200 block of Lemmon Avenue, hitting more vehicles in the northbound lanes, crossed the center median, and hit a tree on the west side of Lemmon Avenue.
Taylor abandoned the truck and ran toward a private hangar building.
Officer Kennan Craven and additional officers ran after the suspect.
The investigation determined Taylor ran into an opening of the building and fired a handgun at least twice at Officer Craven.
Officer Craven returned fire, hitting Taylor in the leg.
Officer Craven and other officers took Taylor into custody inside the building and Dallas Fire Rescue responded and took Taylor to a local hospital for treatment.
Taylor’s handgun as recovered from the scene, which was reported stolen.
No other officers fired their weapons during this incident and no officers were injured.
There were no serious injuries to those involved in crashes with Taylor during the incident.
Taylor will be charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Assault- Public Servant along with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and Evading Arrest in a Vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s office were notified and responded to the scene and will conduct their own investigation.
The Office of Community Police Oversight was notified and responded to the scene.

Original Post: On July 25, 2023, around 11:00 am, Dallas Police were surveilling a stolen U-Haul truck in Northwest Dallas.
The preliminary investigation determined the suspect intentionally rammed into a covert DPD vehicle and took off.
The driver got onto the Tollway, and officers eventually caught up with the suspect when he crashed into several vehicles in the northbound lanes in the 7200 block of Lemmon Avenue, went over the center median, crashing in the southbound lanes.
The suspect got out of the truck and fled toward a private hangar area.
A Patrol officer ran after the suspect and the suspect shot at the officer. The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect in the leg.
The suspect was taken into custody and to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
