Dallas Police Investigate Officer Involved Shooting on Scyene Road

Update:

On September 14, 2023, at about 1:30 p.m., Dallas Police Officers Derek Williams and Christopher Mazin were driving past a business located at 4847 Scyene Road when they saw the suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Juan Vicente Zavala Lopez, shooting into a vehicle.

The officers turned into a nearby business parking lot, got out of their vehicles with their duty weapons drawn.

Zavala Lopez, fired several times at officers as he pulled out of the parking lot, hitting the patrol car.

Officers Williams and Mazin both returned fire at the suspect and got back into their patrol car and chased the suspect to the 4800 block of 2nd Avenue.

The suspect was traveling southbound on Second Avenue, abruptly did a U-turn and drove back toward the officers who got out of their vehicle.

The suspect and Officer Williams exchanged gunfire as the suspect passed.

Officer Williams was hit by the suspect on his right side in his ballistic vest.

The squad car was hit again, several times.

Officer Williams was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later released.

Officer Mazin was not injured.

The victim in the initial shooting on Scyene, Ruperto Mondragon Salgado, 60, died at the scene. Another man inside the vehicle was not injured.

A search was immediately started for the suspect.

The investigation lead detectives and the search to the city of Lewisville and a private home in the 2300 block of South Valley Parkway.

The Dallas Police Fugitive Unit coordinated with Dallas Police SWAT and Lewisville Police to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect was located in a barn on the property and taken into custody by Dallas SWAT.

Zavala Lopez was taken to a local hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound to his leg.

He has been charged with Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault in the homicide on Scyene, and four counts of Aggravated Assault Peace Officer.

He was taken to the Dallas County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s office were notified and responded to the scene and will conduct their own investigation.

The Office of Community Police Oversight was notified and responded to the scene.

The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Juan Vincente Zavala Lopez. He has been charged with Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault in the homicide on Scyene, and four counts of Aggravated Assault Peace Officer. He was taken to the Dallas County Jail.

Update:

The suspect in today’s homicide and officer involved shooting is in custody. He was taken into custody in the area of the 2000 block of South Valley Parkway in Lewisville. Further details will be released on Monday, during a press conference with Chief Garcia.

Dallas Police are asking for help with locating the pictured suspect. The suspect is wanted in a homicide in the 4800 block of Scyene and for shooting at Dallas Police, injuring one of our officers, in the 4700 block of Second Ave. If anyone has information, call 214-671-3467.

On September 14, 2023, at around 1:25 pm, Dallas Police were called to the 4800 block of Scyene for a shooting. 

The preliminary investigation determined one person was shot at the location. Officers saw the suspect firing into the vehicle. 

The suspect then fired at officers and officers returned fire at the suspect. 

The suspect left the scene and officers chased  the suspect to the 4700 block of Second Avenue. 

The preliminary investigation determined the suspect fired again  at officers. Both officers returned fire toward the suspect. 

One officer was hit in the vest. The officer was taken to a local hospital and is currently stable. 

The investigation is ongoing and we are currently are searching for the suspect. 

Detectives have determined the initial shooting was not random. The suspect and victim knew each other. 

The victim in the shooting on Scyene died from his injuries. The victim’s identity is not being released until next of kin is notified.
