National Night Out was established in 1984 and is a yearly event designed to build and strengthen the relationships between police officers and the communities they serve.  It’s held on the first Tuesday in October in neighborhoods and communities across Texas, whereas the other 49 states participate on the first Tuesday in August. National Night Out encourages neighbors and community members to come together with police officers through block parties, cookouts, and safety demonstrations. 

Recent incidents across the country have spawned tension amongst civilians and police officers.  These incidents have opened the door for tough conversations and civilians and police officers alike are understanding the importance of a good working relationship.  National Night Out helps police officers and citizens reason with one another and express concerns on both sides. The Dallas Police Department has amplified this community policing effort by hosting events of this sort throughout the year, i.e. Chief on the Beat, Coffee with Cops, Let’s Talk, etc. 

This year, Dallas Chief of Police David O. Brown will attend the National Night Out Crime Prevention Event hosted by Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson at the University of North Texas at Dallas.  Chief Brown will join Loretta E. Lynch, Attorney General of the United States, Mayor Mike Rawlings, Bob Mong, President of the University of North Texas at Dallas, State Representative Helen Giddings, and State Representative Eric Johnson at this event in District 8.  The program begins at 5:30 p.m. and concludes at 8 p.m.
