The Dallas Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a critical missing person, Gabriella Johnson.  On November 27, 2015, at around 1:30 p.m., Gabiella Johnson left her residence on foot located in the 600 block of Furlong Drive, Dallas, Texas following a verbal altercation with family members. Gabriella Johnson is considered to be a danger to herself or others based on statements she made prior to leaving the residence. Mrs. Johnson is described as a 14 year old Latin female and  is 5’4”, weighs 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Last seen wearing a red sweatshirt with “Florida” written on the front, blue jeans and brown buckle up shoes. possibly covered in mud.

Officer Involved Shooting on Wilbur Street

Update: November 21, 2015

As part of the on-going investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 2700 block of Wilbur St. on November 19, 2015, Dallas police have arrested Victor Solorzano L/M 1-8-1985 for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. 

Additionally, Dallas police Special Investigations Unit detectives have charged both Victor Solorzano and Edgar Solorzano with two counts of Aggravated Assault, one for each of the officers that were fired upon.

Both have been placed in the Dallas County Jail.  This investigation remains active and open and we will release additional details as they become available and appropriate for release. 

Update: Press Conference – November 20, 2015

On November 19, 2015, members of a multi-jurisdictional task force were involved in an operation in the 2700 block of Wilbur Street in Dallas, Texas. The members were working in a covert capacity in plain clothes driving unmarked vehicles. Based on the investigation thus far, we know one of the task force officers, who happens to work for the Arlington Police Department, was approached by Edgar Solorzano who was armed with an assault rifle. After a very brief exchange, Edgar Solorzano began shooting at the undercover officer who ran.  Edgar followed the fleeing officer firing at him as he jumped into one of the covert vehicles and drove away to seek medical attention.

Today, Dallas police detectives arrested Edgar Solorzano L/M 06/24/1992 for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He will be placed in the Dallas County Jail.

This remains an active investigation and we want to express our thanks to the public, especially those in the neighborhood around Wilbur Street who were disrupted due to street closures while we investigated this incident.

On November 19, 2015, at about 6:15 am officers responded to calls for police in the 2700 block of Wilbur Street. Officers from a multi-jurisdictional task force were working an operation at the location and came under fire by an unidentified subject. During this altercation, an officer from the Arlington Police Department was struck by the gunfire. The officer was removed from the scene for the purpose of obtaining medical attention. The officer was transported to Methodist Hospital where he is in stable condition and is expected to recover.   The Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit will be handling the investigation. This remains an ongoing, dynamic incident that limits the release of more detailed information until further investigation is completed, but we will be disseminating more information as it becomes available.

DPD Celebrates 90th Anniversary of the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic

 

statefairclassic2On Saturday, September 26, 2015, officers and civil servants from the Dallas Police Department will participate in the 90th Anniversary of the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic football game, which will be held at the State Fair of Texas.  DPD is honored to participate in this popular event as it greatly assists the department in furthering our citywide outreach efforts.  

In addition to the normal safety and traffic activities, the Department will partake in the State Fair Classic festivities in the following ways:

  • Photographs produced by Hadnot Photography will display officers on video boards, wearing their uniforms, contrasted with their fraternity, sorority, or college clothes.
  • Videos highlighting DPD programs will be displayed before and during the game.
  • Chief Brown and officers will escort the game trophy onto the field prior to kickoff.
  • Officer Charles Vaughn will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing” during the pre-game activities.
  • DPD Vehicles will be displayed at field level during the game.
  • Officers will hand out safety information outside the Cotton Bowl before, during, and after the game.

Help Us Identify the Burglary Suspects

The Dallas Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating the suspects from the burglary offense listed below.

On August 22, 2015, at approximately 3:55 p.m., officers responded to a burglary call in the 1800 block of Billie Drive. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated that while he was out of his residence three Black male suspects, who appear to be between the ages of 20-30 years old, broke into his home. The victim stated that he had surveillance cameras installed throughout his home and was able to get video of the offense. The video shows the suspects being driven away by an unknown fourth suspect in a dark blue Chevrolet Malibu.

Officers’ Tourniquet Helped Save Child’s Life

On August 22, 2015, at approximately 3:37 p.m., a 911 call was made in regards to a disturbance with an active shooter in a vehicle, located near N. Marsalis Avenue and E. 6th Street. At approximately 3:41 p.m., Officer J. Saldana #10733 was flagged down by a distraught mother near Young Street and Lamar Street. Preliminary information indicated that three unknown males in a vehicle discharged a firearm at a family of four. Officer Saldana observed a four-year-old Latin female with a gunshot wound, and called for Dallas Fire Rescue. Cover Officer C. Mattox #10467 and Jesus Tovar #10719 arrived on scene and noticed that the victim sustained two wounds on the left leg caused by a gunshot. The victim’s mother had a placed pressure on the wound using a t-shirt, but officers noticed blood continued to spurt from the wounds. Officer Mattox and Officer Tovar removed a tourniquet and applied it to the victim’s leg to halt the bleeding. Officer B. Helms #10724 retrieved gauze and dressed the victim’s wounds. At approximately 3:45 p.m., Dallas Fire Rescue arrived on scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. Youth detectives have taken over the investigation and are currently interviewing witnesses.

Officer Mattox remained by the victim’s side, held her hand, and kept her distracted as they rode to the hospital together. Officer Mattox was captivated by the victim’s bravery, and stated that she was “a trooper,” who remained calm and alert despite the severity of her injuries. On the other hand, DFR paramedics praised the Dallas police officers’ swift actions, and stated that the use of the tourniquet prevented the victim from bleeding out. The Dallas Police Department would like to commend Officer J. Saldana, C. Mattox, J. Tovar, and B. Helms for their paramount actions during those four minutes that helped save a young child’s life.

Subway Murder at 600 W. Illinois Avenue

Second Update: August 18, 2015

Dallas Police continue to pursue leads regarding the capital murder case that occurred on June 14, 2015 when during a robbery of a Subway restaurant at 655 W. Illinois Ave., where employee Leonardo Ortega was shot and killed.

On July 31, 2015, Officers, acting on a Crime Stoppers tip, made contact with Christopher Miller. Mr. Miller voluntarily came to Dallas Police headquarters and met with detectives, where he admitted involvement in the offense.  Anderson Jones was identified as an accomplice. When Mr. Jones was located, he was found to be in possession of marijuana and was arrested and held on a possession of marijuana charge and the capital murder, while the case was further investigated.

During a case review, detectives found inconsistencies in Mr. Miller’s statements and determined his explanation to be unreliable. On August 13, 2015, after conferring with the DA’s office, Dallas Police released the capital murder charges against Mr. Anderson Jones and Mr. Christopher Miller. An administrative investigation has been initiated to determine if the case detective followed procedures relating to the Dallas Police Department’s policies.

Mr. Ortega’s family has been kept abreast of the developments in this case. This case remains an open investigation and detectives will continue to pursue all leads to find the persons responsible for the capital murder of Mr. Ortega.

On June 14, 2015, the victim Leonardo Ortega and another employee were in the process of closing the Subway Store located at 655 W. Illinois Street, in the Wynnewood Shopping Center. Two male suspects entered the store with their face and head covered while the third male suspect stood outside in the parking lot as the look out. Suspect #1 points a handgun at the victim and witness and demands the money. Suspect #2 took the money from the register. A struggle ensues between Suspect #1 and the victim. Suspect #1 then shoots the victim Leonardo Ortega killing him. During the investigation it was determined that Suspect Anderson Jones B/M 6/5/1978 and Christopher Miller B/M 6/6/1980 committed this offense, both suspects were arrested August 2, 2015, and charged with Capital Murder. One unidentified suspect remains at large Please see the probable cause affidavit below for more information.

On June 14, 2015, the victim, Leonardo Ortega, Latin male 28, was working at the Subway located at 655 W. Illinois Ave.  Right before closing time, at approximately 10:52 p.m., two unknown Black male suspects, possibly in their 20s, entered the business and jumped the counter. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the victim and another employee demanding money.  A third suspect waited outside and was acting as a lookout.  A struggle ensued between the victim and the suspects.  One of the suspects shot the victim numerous times in the torso.  All three suspects fled the location southbound, running towards the Wynnewood Garden Apartments on Garapan Drive.  The suspects stole an undetermined amount of money.

The Dallas Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects that murdered Mr. Ortega.  If anyone has information, please call Detective Perez at (214)671-3608 or Crime Stoppers at (214) 373-TIPS. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000.00 for information that will lead to the arrest and indictment of this felony offense. 

In addition to Crime Stoppers, Oak Farms Dairy is also offering a $10,000 reward.  Oak Farms will pay $10,000 for information that will lead to the arrest and indictment of the individuals responsible.

Community Awareness Bulletin: Indecency With a Child Arrest

On August 5, 2015, detectives in the Child Exploitation Unit arrested Ernest Donell Green, Black male,  61 years of age. The arrest stemmed from an investigation that was initiated on August 2, 2015, after patrol officers responded to a call for service regarding the possible sexual abuse of several male juveniles by an adult male. The male juvenile complainants range in age from 13 years of age to 16 years of age at the time the offenses occurred. Suspect Green was the founder and operator of a youth mentoring program called United Youth Core, which he ran out of his apartment in the 3000 block of Bickers Street, Dallas, TX.

Three (3) cases of Indecency with a Child (Contact), F/2, were developed from the investigation. On August 5, 2015, with the assistance of Dallas SWAT, Southwest Patrol CRT, Metro Deployment, a search warrant was executed at Suspect Green’s residence. Suspect Green surrendered at Dallas Police Headquarters with his attorney. Suspect Green was placed in Lew Sterrett jail with a $50,000 bond for each of the three felony charges. The Indecency with a Child offenses have been reported on case numbers 178517-2015, 179124-2015, and 179125-2015.

July’s Officer of the Month: Det. McAnally

Congratulations to Detective Travis McAnally, #9007, for being selected by the Dallas Community Police Awards Committee as the “Officer of the Month” for July 2015.  Among the many outstanding men and women of the Dallas Police Department, his work has been identified as reflecting highly on both him and his profession.

Detective McAnally joined the Southwest Investigations Unit in January 2013. During his tenure as a property crimes detective, he has been assigned 1,266 cases to investigate and has filed 188 criminal cases, including 111 for felony charges. This includes 83 burglary cases, 44 thefts and 5 cruelties to animal cases.

On March 28, 2013, just three months after joining the Investigative Unit, he was assigned an Animal Cruelty case where an unknown suspect had placed a dog that was locked in a portable pet kennel into an apartment complex trash compactor.   Detective McAnally secured video from the apartment security system and was able to identify a possible suspect. A probable cause arrest warrant was obtained and the suspect was taken to the Southwest Investigative Unit where Detective McAnally interviewed her. During the interview, the suspect admitted to committing the offense, documented on case number 0074127A.

Dallas Community Police Awards Committee honored and recognized him for his outstanding contributions in serving the citizens of Dallas. The committee invited him and his family to a breakfast on Thursday, July 30th, held at the Dallas Police Association.

Southwest Center Mall ATM Attempt Theft

On Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at approximately 4:30 a.m., Dallas police officers responded to a call at the Southwest Center Mall located at 3662 W. Camp Wisdom Road. Two unknown Black male suspects made entry into the mall. Once inside, both suspects attempted to pry open the ATM. The suspect were unsuccessful and fled the location.  In the below surveillance video both suspects have their heads covered. This incident is documented on case number 173553-2015.
